Single Women Homesteaders
The 1862 Homesteading Act guaranteed free farmland to heads of households with the stipulation that the applicant must stay on the land for five years and make noticeable improvements to the land before the deed was awarded. Women who were single, widowed, or divorced were eligible to apply for land as the head of their household and many headed west into Dakota Territory. Through the reading of letters written by homesteading women and accounts of descendents, their hardships and triumphs are remembered and their perseverance is honored.

Empowerment
This video from Women, War & Peace demonstrates the power of women and suggests that in today’s world, especially with the evolution of communication, the presence of women at peace talks is necessary and inevitable. In October 2000, the United Nations Security Council passed the first resolution.
Resolution 1325, devoted to women, after intense pressure from female activists. Resolution 1325 stipulated that at peace building and reconstruction negotiations, women must be considered. Despite the resolution, women still struggle to be heard and included in such negotiations, but they continue to fight for their rights.

Sea Creatures
The largest and least explored place on earth is in the deep sea below the ocean’s surface. The fish and other sea animals of the deep sea employ many strategies to surprise their prey including ambush and camouflage by blending into the sea environment. The deeper you go in the ocean, the more unusual and unique the fish appear to be. Learn about the ghostly squid, the simulating jelly fish, the viper fish, and the gulper fish (among many others) in this video segment from Nature.
