Clink, clink, clink. More iron ore is being mined in Michigan iron mines. The 1800’s were a good time to be mining. Iron ore was found in Michigan as an important natural resource.
First, William Burt discovered iron ore by accident. It’s hard to believe but his compass needle did not point north at all! You will be excited to learn that his henchmen found it pointing to large pieces of iron ore instead. Surprisingly, no one in Michigan had any clue the state had the metal iron ore.
Next, an Ojibwa chief helped miners. Let me tell you about how some people from Jackson, Michigan wanted to start an iron mine. On the journey to find a place, they met an Indian chief. He let them in on a secret. The chief’s name was Marji-Gesick. Marji-Gesick took them to a hill which gleamed in the sun. It was full of iron ore!
Finally, iron ore is a valuable resource in Michigan. Surprisingly, Michigan only has two working iron mines. It is true that they can still produce much iron ore. Over the years, workers have mined over two million tons of iron ore in the Upper Peninsula.
An important resource in Michigan is iron ore. People use it all over the world to mix or just make metals. Iron ore was a great find!
